Die Kölner Lumpenbälle

mit den Progressiven sind immer die berühmten Lumpenbälle in Verbindung gebracht worden. Sie sind inzwischen zur Legende geworden, ja waren es schon in den zwanziger Jahren. Photos von August Sander, dem Freund der Gruppe zeigen nochmals Szenen und Menschen. Die Lumpenbälle waren antibürgerlich, intellektuell, exklusiv aber ohne Snobismus wir wählten die Besucher aus und ließen nur diejenigen zu, die uns gefielen.
Es fand dergestalt eine Integration statt, von Leuten die zusammengehörten, die sich verstanden und die uns verstanden. Juden waren unsere zahlreichsten Kunden. Die Erlöse wurden geteilt. Sie haben im In- und Ausland manchen Freund über Wasser gehalten. Dieser Zweck und das eigene Vergnügen hinderten jedoch nicht, das mit den Lumpenbällen ein ganz neuer Kanevalsstil in Köln begründet wurde. Eine solche Freiheit des Dionosyschen hatte es bis dahin noch nicht gegeben. Der offizielle Karneval, den wir verachteten, nahm uns nicht zur Kenntnis, wenngleich hin und wieder Versuche gemacht wurden, uns zu diffamieren. Auch später gab es Künstlerbälle mannigfacher Art, bis heute hin. Aber sie haben den Reiz und das Geheimnis der alten Lumpenbälle nie erreicht.
Der letzte echte fand 1933 statt.
