Otto Freundlich

ist 1878 in Stolp/Pommern, dem heute polnischen Slupsk geboren. Er studiert zunächst in Berlin und findet ab 1908 schnell Anschluss an die avantgardistischen Künstlerkreise in Paris, zeitweise arbeitet er wie Picasso im Bateau-Lavoir am Montmartre. Freundlich entwickelt sich zu einem der frühesten Vertreter der abstrakt-ungegenständlichen Kunst, er ist in den wichtigsten zeitgenössischen Künstlervereinigungen aktiv, so bei der Berliner „Novembergruppe“ oder bei „Abstraction – Création“ in Paris. Mit der Kunstpolitik des Nationalsozialismus werden ab 1933 Freundlichs Werke aus den deutschen Museen entfernt, seine Plastik „Der neue Mensch“ wird 1937 auf dem Umschlag des Ausstellungskataloges „Entartete Kunst“ gezeigt. Freundlich lebt ab 1925 in Paris und wird bei Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs als Deutscher interniert. Nach einer Odyssee durch verschiedene französische Internierungslager kann der Künstler zunächst nach Südfrankreich fliehen. Im Februar 1943 wird er in dem kleinen Pyrenäendorf St. Martin-de-Fenouillet aufgrund einer Denunziation verhaftet und in das Konzentrationslager Lublin-Majdanek deportiert. Er stirbt am 9. März 1943, dem Tag seiner Ankunft im Lager.

1912 schuf Otto Freundlich die Plastik Der neue Mensch. Die Figur erinnert an die Steinköpfe der Osterinseln und symbolisierte den erhofften „geistigen Neubeginn“ der Vorkriegszeit. 1930 kaufte der damalige Direktor Max Sauerlandt das Werk für das Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg. 1937 wurde es während der Aktion „Entartete Kunst“ beschlagnahmt, in der gleichnamigen Ausstellung in München vorgeführt und zudem auf dem Titelblatt des Ausstellungskataloges verwendet. Das fotografische Abbild (von unten aufgenommen) verzerrt den Kopf, so wirkt er hochmütig und schmerzvoll. Während der Wanderung der Ausstellung durch weitere Städte ist die Plastik abhanden gekommen und gilt seither als verschollen, vermutlich zerstört. Im Jüdischen Museum Berlin ist nun für diese Figur ein Stellvertreter, ein „Schwarzer Fleck“ ausgestellt (Gallery of the Missing), als Symbol für den Verlust und die Zerstörung von Kultur- und Kunstwerken durch den Nationalsozialismus.

Le Bateau-Lavoir

Er studiert zunächst in Berlin und findet ab 1908 schnell Anschluss an die avantgardistischen Künstlerkreise in Paris, zeitweise arbeitet er wie Picasso im Bateau-Lavoir am Montmartre. Freundlich entwickelt sich zu einem der frühesten Vertreter der abstrakt-ungegenständlichen Kunst, er ist in den wichtigsten zeitgenössischen Künstlervereinigungen aktiv, so bei der Berliner „Novembergruppe“ oder bei „Abstraction – Création“ in Paris.

„Er hatte sich gerade im Hotel Galamus „eingerichtet“. Eine weitere Hoffnung auf Ruhe, ein weiterer Ort der Ungewissheit. Eine „vorläufige Bleibe“, wie man sagt…Wie gewöhnlich war seine finanzielle Lage katastrophal. Wie hatte er es überhaupt geschafft, das nötige Geld für die Reise nach Saint-Paul, ein bescheidenes Hotelzimmer und den Aufenthalt zu organisieren? Vielleicht war es seinem Freund, dem Dichter Max Jacob, der selbst nicht gerade reich war, gelungen, ihm vom Kloster in Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire aus, von wo er ihm am 11. Oktober 1939 geschrieben hatte, eine kleine Anweisung zu senden.

Wahrscheinlicher ist, daß die treue Hedwig Muschg, die er 1927 in Paris kennengelernt hatte, erneut ein oder zwei seiner Bilder für ihn verkaufen konnte oder selbst gekauft hatte. Die wunderbare Hedwig hatte ihm bis zum Schluss geholfen. Manchmal schickte die bescheidene Volksschullehrerin ihm die Hälfte ihres Lohns…“
